Give “I don’t know” a place to go.

Make missing details visible when an AI assistant turns notes into a plan.

MAKE ROOM FORoneSMALL SKILL

A tidy answer can hide an empty space.

Imagine turning meeting notes into a checklist. A polished list with an owner and a deadline on every line looks reassuring. But your notes might not actually name either. A useful plan should show those gaps instead of filling them with plausible guesses.

Give the assistant a clear boundary: use only the supplied notes, and write “not specified” for missing facts. This instruction does not guarantee accuracy. It gives you something concrete to check when you compare the answer with the source.

Keep the unknown visible

Source note

Someone brings markers by Friday.

Faithful extraction

Owner: not specified Deadline: Friday

Illustrated expected facts, not a captured AI response.

Check the omissions as well as the facts.

Our fictional notes say that Lee will book a room, and someone needs to bring markers by Friday. They do not say when the room booking is due or who will bring the markers. Those are separate uncertainties.

Read the resulting checklist against the two sentences, one item at a time. If the assistant gives Lee both jobs, it has added a responsibility. If it labels both deadlines Friday, it has spread a date beyond the note that contained it.

A small example to try
Notes: Lee will book a room. Someone needs to bring markers by Friday. Make a checklist with task, owner, and deadline. Use only these notes. Write “not specified” for missing owners or deadlines.
Your turn 5 minutes

Make it yours.

  1. Paste the fictional notes and instruction into an assistant.
  2. Compare each owner and deadline with the original sentences.
  3. Ask it to correct any fact that the notes do not support.

What changed when you tried it?

A little nudge

Check owners and deadlines separately. A name near a task is not proof that it owns every task.

What to look for

Book room: Lee, deadline not specified. Bring markers: owner not specified, Friday.

Take it one small step further

Add an explicit owner for the markers and rerun the prompt.

Keep this bit

A visible gap is more useful than a confident guess.
